S5 Netball
As we become increasingly reliant on technology, it is no surprise that online training programs have become a convenient yet essential part of skill development. Netball is no exception, and with S5 Netball, our athletes receive top-quality coaching from the comfort of their own homes, at their own pace.
Led by former Silver Fern Captain, Casey Kopua, participants will have access to a wealth of knowledge and experience, allowing them to elevate their game to the next level.
S5 Netball Coaching Package
There are many challenges within today’s busy world. To achieve sporting success, it is essential to understand:
- The Challenges – The pressure to win, training large groups of athletes, having enough training time to get everything done, having adequate facilities, and having help with coaching
- The Athlete – Understanding their growth and development needs, training experience, the demands of the sport they play, and injury-prone areas
S5 Netball is at the forefront of athlete development which brings NZ Netball legend Casey Kopua into the S5 team to deliver netball skills that are appropriate for each individual athlete.
S5 refers to the five basic Ss of Training and Performance:
- STRENGTH – Integrated Strength Training to help perform netball skills.
- SPEED – Integrated Speed, Agility, and Quickness Training to help you on the court.
- STAMINA – Energy System Development. From general to specific fitness and conditioning.
- SKILL – Movement Efficiency with running, jumping, landing, change of direction and netball skills.
- SUPPLENESS – Integrated Flexibility Training and Core Stabilization Training.
This is the backbone of our programming, and we train all physical attributes during all stages of development. Some training methods are prioritised or reduced at certain periods (e.g., prioritising motor coordination training when motor coordination is impaired during peak height velocity to reduce injuries).
How Does S5 Netball Work?
Once you join S5 Netball an S5 Planner is created and instructions are sent to you.
Casey provides individualised feedback for you on your netball skills, including game play to help develop an all-around player. Barrie will provide feedback on your S&C. As you advance through basic skills, more advanced skills are programmed, and you progress through a coloured bib grading system.
White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown and Black bibs. We chose ‘Bibs’ to reflect the positional bibs worn by all netball players through all grades from juniors to elite netball.
You advance through the coloured bib system by achieving skills set by Casey and by regular monthly testing on netball skills and S&C skills set by Barrie. There is a ‘Catch & Pass’ test, a special ‘Netball Agility’ test, strength and jump testing that you perform to advance through the bibs.
- ‘Catch & Pass’ Test. This is a series of timed catch & pass skills against a wall. You upload the results, and a ‘Catch & Pass Score’ is calculated and displayed in your S5 Planner. This test is done every 8 weeks beginning in the first month.
- The ‘Netball Agility’ test is one where you perform it over a set course on the netball court and have it videoed by family or friends. You then upload it to the app, where it is assessed, and an agility score is calculated. This test is done every 8 weeks beginning in the second month. An S5 Agility Score is calculated and displayed in your S5 Planner.
- ‘Strength Testing’. You perform 6 exercises and have them videoed( The type of exercise changes as you progress through the grades) and upload your results in the Client Portal. This is thenm converted to a Strength Score and is displayed in your S5 Planner. You upload up to a 30sec video of yourself performing an exercise if requested by Casey or Baz.
- ‘Jump Testing’. Selected jumps are tested every month, even weekly if you wish to, and uploaded via the Client Portal.
Your testing scores are continually updated and shown in your S5 Planner.

S5 Netball program structure
S5 Netball - Program Goals
Key to the design is leading athletes through a quality, systematic, structured, progressive and continuous program that includes sport-specific fundamentals. injury prevention, enhance performance and increase work capacity.
S5 Netball – Program Evaluation
We constantly evaluate the impact of the program so that improvements can be made with delivery, to be more efficient, produce data and valid comparisons between programs, as well as evaluate how successful the program was in educating the athlete. Success is remaining open to continuing feedback and adjusting the program accordingly.
S5 Netball - Program Annual Plan
Training to compete in the off-season, training to play pre-season, and training to win in-season.
Off-season is the developmental phase where the objectives are to determine player strengths and limitations to enhance the athlete’s level and volume of strength, speed, stamina, skills and suppleness.
Pre-season is a peak phase and becomes sport specific. Development is continued but the volume of work for strength training is reduced. Training, conditioning, speed, agility and plyometrics become more energy specific. Exercises must be of high quality and have a maximum training effect. Volume drops progressively to allow for an increase in intensity.
In-season is a competitive phase where netball performance is key. The relationship between S5 and the athlete, is critical so that everyone is on the same page and, allows for individual training plans. Total training volume should complement fundamental work.
S5 Netball – Program Implementation
Exercises and drills will be organised on a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily basis to peak players as they go into the competitive season.
